Helper of the Fatherless

January 19, 2021: SOAP #4065:  Genesis 47-48; Psalm 10; Luke 19

SCRIPTURE:  Psalm (NIV) 10:12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”? 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

OBSERVATION:  The Psalmist makes it clear; God is the helper of the fatherless.

APPLICATION:  Here is an excerpt from “George Muller” by J. Gilchrist Lawson:   Greatest of all Muller’s undertakings was the erection and maintenance of the great orphanages at Bristol. He began the undertaking with only two shillings (50 cents) in his pocket; but in answer to prayer and without making his needs known to human beings, he received the means necessary to erect the great buildings [5 orphanages] and to feed the orphans [10,000] day by day for sixty years. In all that time the children did not have to go without a meal, and Mr. Muller said that if they ever had to go without a meal, he would take it as evidence that the Lord did not will the work to continue.

When we ask man to help us, we get what man can provide.  But when we ask God to help, we get what God can provide!   Of course, God will use man in many ways to be a part of His answer, but the glory must go to God alone for He alone heard the prayers.  And those participating in God’s answer rejoice in hearing His voice and being a part of His answer.

PRAYER:  Holy Spirit, anoint me to build faith in your Word.  I pray especially for those who have the responsibility to provide for the helpless and fatherless children.  Build their faith.  May their ministry be proof that you hear and answer prayer.  Give them testimonies like the one above, testimonies that can encourage others.  Amen.
