My Source of Comfort

December 05, 2021: SOAP #4385:  Ephesians 5-6; Psalm 119:1-80

SCRIPTURE:  Psalm (NIV) 119:50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. …
52 I remember your ancient laws, O LORD, and I find comfort in them. …
54 Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I lodge.
55 In the night I remember your name, O LORD, and I will keep your law.

OBSERVATION: The psalmist had good times and hard times.  His rejoicing can often be seen in the psalms he writes.  But we can also read about his cries for help when he is struggling or depressed.

In the above verses he writes of a source of comfort during times of suffering: the scriptures, God’s promises, God’s laws.

APPLICATION:  I have personally noticed how a personal, current knowledge of God’s word gives comfort and inner strength to those enduring hardship and suffering.   I have also noticed how people with a shallow understanding of the scriptures lack confidence in God’s ability to see them through hard times.

Taking God’s word into our lives must be a current priority.  If the Lord allows us to grow older, we may not be able to read, we may not be able to attend church or gather with other believers.  We must store up God’s word in our minds and hearts today.

PRAYER:  Lord, in times of trouble, may I never be short of the comfort you have provide in your Word.  Amen.
