Ordinary Possessions

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 22, 2023: SOAP #4798: Exodus 3-5; Luke 22

SCRIPTURE:  Exodus (NIV) 4:2 Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 3 The LORD said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So, Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand….
17 But take this staff in your hand so that you can perform miraculous signs with it.”
20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.

OBSERVATION:  In verse two, it was just a staff.  It was a walking stick.  It was something Moses probably found laying on the ground.  He picked it up to help him on a rocky path.  Then he found it useful to move something just out of reach.  Before long, others would recognize it a Moses’s rod.

But when God used it, it became the “staff of God.”  It was used to do miracles before Pharoah.  It was used when God rolled back the waters of the Red Sea, and then when they closed over Pharoah’s army.

APPLICATION:  I wonder what I have in my hand that might become special when used at God’s direction and under the anointing of the Holy Spirit.  It probably is not a stick, but it might be a savings account, or a automobile, or a boat, or extra time every Monday or Tuesday, or a talent that I am too busy to use.

Ordinary things used at God’s direction are often accompanied by the Spirit’s anointing.

PRAYER:   Lord, like Moses had to throw his rod on the ground, so I must be willing to drop my possessions in order for them to be used and transformed by you.  Amen.

Instructions & A Promise

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 21, 2023: SOAP #4797: Exodus 1-2; Psalm 88; Luke 21

SCRIPTURE:  Luke (NIV) 21:14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

OBSERVATION:  Jesus was talking to the disciples about the end times.  There will be trouble, so He gives instructions and a promise.

The instructions are not very easy.  We are to determine beforehand not to allow negative thoughts into our thought process.  As surely as we would work to keep germs out of an open wound, we need to work on keeping worries out of our mind.  It is a tough assignment as our minds tend to focus on the bad things around us.  If it can go wrong

But we are promised help.  God is working inside.  The Holy Spirit has taken up residence in the believer.  Jesus promised to give us “words and wisdom.”

APPLICATION: I have discovered that I cannot keep thoughts of doubt out of my mind by trying not to think about them.  When I think about not letting them in my mind, I am actually thinking about them!  To overcome worry, I must fill my thoughts with thoughts of praise.  I must fill my mind with the promises of God.

When things are going good, I can set a pattern of praise in my heart.  Every day, I can set my mind on God’s Word.  Doing that faithfully every day keeps those thoughts at the front of my mind.

PRAYER:   Lord, you are worthy of all my praise. There is nothing I will face today that you cannot give me the wisdom I will need. Holy Spirit, your presence gives me the courage to face the unknown.  Amen.

Important to God!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 20, 2023: SOAP #4796: Genesis 49-50; Psalm 8; Luke 20

SCRIPTURE:  Psalm (NIV) 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

OBSERVATION:  Consider the following:
1.  Children offer the purest praise, not yet tainted by sin.
2.  Children are made in the image of God.
3.  Jesus came into this world as a child.
4.  Every hero, every great leader, every doctor, etc. came into the world as a child.
5.  We all come to Him as children. Let’s offer pure praise!

Considering the above, it is not so difficult to understand why the Lord’s enemy would want to destroy children.

APPLICATION: What is important to God is important to me.   Children are so important to God that he considers what I do to children as though I did it to Him!

Note:  I would like to recommend reading about George Muller who built several orphanages:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_M%C3%BCller#Personal_life

PRAYER:   Lord I pray your blessing on everyone who ministers to children.  Bless parents and those who minister to children in schools and parks, in hospitals and special homes.  Bless those who have opened their hearts and homes to orphans. Increase their faith.  Amen.

His Ministry Continues

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 19, 2023: SOAP #4795: Genesis 47-48; Psalm 10; Luke 19

SCRIPTURE:  Luke (NIV) 19:47 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

OBSERVATION:  During the days before His crucifixion, Jesus had a daily ministry.  He went to the temple and taught.  His teaching captivated the attention of those who listened.  They were so attentive that those desiring to kill Jesus, could find no way to disrupt Him.

APPLICATION:  The Holy Spirit continues this teaching ministry of Jesus today.  We do not need to go to the temple in Jerusalem to hear His teaching.  The Holy Spirit will meet with us in a quiet time when our hearts and minds are open.  He will give us understanding of the scriptures.  He will recall the things Jesus has taught.  He will apply them to our daily life.  (John 14:26; 16:13-15)

PRAYER:   Holy Spirit, You are the key to living victoriously in today’s world.  Bring to mind the words of Jesus.  Bring to mind what I have read in my Bible reading.  Bring to my mind what I have heard from anointed ministry. As we walk through this coming week, make me aware of how I can apply the Word in my daily life.  Amen.

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 18, 2023: SOAP #4794: Genesis 44-46; Luke 18

SCRIPTURE:  Genesis (NIV) 45:4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! 5 And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. 6 For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will not be ploughing and reaping. 7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

OBSERVATION:  What was true?  Did Joseph’s brothers sell him OR did God send him?  When was it that Joseph fully understood the truth that God had a plan in bringing him to Egypt.  Was it when He interpreted the dream for Pharoah?  Was it when Pharoah gave him a ring of authority and put him in charge of all Egypt?  Maybe it was one night in his prison cell.

Whenever it was, when Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, He could confidently say, “God sent me!”  .

APPLICATION: About 2000 years later another often referred to Himself as sent by God.  Jesus!  God so loved the world that He sent Jesus. (John 3:16)  Joseph was sent to Egypt to preserve the line through which the Savior would come.  Jesus was sent to be the savior.  God still loves the world, so we are sent (every SOAP reader is sent) to make sure everyone has the opportunity to hear about Jesus.

PRAYER:   Lord, use me/us today to speak to one person.  Amen.

Every Word and Every Deed

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 17, 2023: SOAP #4793: Genesis 42-43; Psalm 5; Luke 17

SCRIPTURE:  Psalm (NIV) 5:4 You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot dwell. 5 The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong. 6 You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors. 7 But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence will I bow down towards your holy temple.

OBSERVATION:  What a holy God!  He is perfectly holy.  There is no place in His presence for wickedness.  So how is it that in verse 7, the Psalmist comes into the presence of the Holy God?  He enters on the basis of God’s mercy.  Not just His mercy, but His GREAT MERCY!
In David’s time, God’s mercy was extended based on animal sacrifices made at the temple for the sins of people.  Those animal sacrifices in themselves could not provide forgiveness for man, but they were statements of faith that God would provide the perfect sacrifice that would have value enough to cover man’s sin.  And that is what Jesus did on the cross.  He provided the sinless sacrifice that has more value than all the sins of man.
If the blood of bulls and goats would be accepted in the courts of heaven to cover sin, how much more will the sinless blood of Jesus cover our sin when we confess our sins and receive His forgiveness by faith!

APPLICATION: Knowing the great sin-covering sacrifice Jesus made allowing me to enter the presence of the Most Holy God, how do I express my appreciation?  I do it by inviting the Holy Spirit to convict me when I sin.  I do it by quickly repenting and asking forgiveness when I sin.  I do it by asking the Holy Spirit to empower me to resist the temptation to sin.  I do it by reading the Bible to learn what pleases God.  I do it in my praise and worship.  I do it in witnessing to those around me.
Simply said, my whole life, every word and every deed, are an expression of appreciation to the Lord!

PRAYER:  Holy Spirit, help me live each moment of my life to honor Jesus and His sacrifice. May my life be a testimony to others of Jesus love and sacrifice.   Amen.

From Prison to the Palace!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 16, 2023: SOAP #4792: Genesis 39-41; Luke 16

SCRIPTURE:  Genesis (NIV) 41:39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no-one so discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”

OBSERVATION:  What a day for Joseph!  What a change!  In the morning he woke up in the prison; at night he went to bed in the palace!   In the morning he answered to the jailor; in the evening he answered only to Pharoah!   In the morning he was responsible to provide the food for the prisoners; that night he became responsible for feeding the nation for seven years of famine!

Yet not everything changed.   Joseph was feeding prisoners in prison; he would soon be feeding the nation.  Joseph was living for God in the prison; he would be living for God in the palace.  Joseph lived under the favor of God in the prison; he would be living under the favor of God in the palace.

APPLICATION: My circumstances do not affect the “favor of God.”  My circumstances should not affect my attitude.  Bad circumstances should not make me a complainer.  God is with me in bad times as He is in good times.  My circumstances should not affect my faith in God’s love for me.

The only thing I could imagine greater than being transferred from an Egyptian prison to being second in command of all of Egypt would be to be transferred from a death bed on earth to the Throne Room of Heaven!!!!

PRAYER:   Lord, I lift my eyes from my troubles to see you lifted on the cross.  Your favor flows to me from the cross where you paid for my sins. You did for me what I could not do for myself.  I gratefully receive your forgiveness and set you as The Lord of my life.  Amen.

He’s BACK!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 15, 2023: SOAP #4791: Genesis 37-38; Psalm 7; Luke 15

SCRIPTURE:  Luke (NIV) 15:6 … Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’…
9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ …
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So, they began to celebrate. 25 …music and dancing.

OBSERVATION: The three stories Jesus tells in this chapter all have something in common; what was lost was found and there was rejoicing: a sheep, a coin, and a son.

The Lord showed me that the value of what was recovered set the tone for the rejoicing.  Surely the rejoicing for finding the sheep and the coin was genuine.  But oh, the rejoicing in the Father’s heart on the recovery of His son!

APPLICATION:  Jesus’ stories/parables were all true to life.  People could easily identify with what He said.  He did not use fictional characters to teach eternal truth.

Here, what was a story for Jesus, is reality for Sharon and me.  Having our son back home is such a joy.  Having him back in right relationship with Jesus is even a greater joy.  Hearing him talk about what God is saying to him, causes my heart to rejoice.  The blessing God gave us years ago in Doron, has been restored to our home.  Rejoice with us!!!

PRAYER:   Truly, Lord, You are the great Promise Keeper!  We can trust you to keep your word.  Thank you for watching over our son. Thank you for watching over the word that was planted in his heart in his younger years.  Amen.

Something for Everyone!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 14, 2023: SOAP #4790: Genesis 34-36; Luke 14

SCRIPTURE:  Luke (NIV) 14:12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

OBSERVATION:  Jesus had been watching the guests at a banquet and made two comments.  First to the guests: instead of taking a place of honor, they should choose for themselves a humble seat, because it is better to be blessed by being escorted to a place of more honor than to be asked to move to a place of less honor.  Second to those hosting the banquet:  Invite people who cannot repay you, because there is One watching who can repay and you will be repaid when it really counts.

APPLICATION: Proverbs 19:17 reads: “He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.” When God sees me doing a kindness for someone from whom I expect no repayment, he takes it personally.  He looks at it as though I did it for him!    He takes the responsibility for the repayment, if not in this life, then certainly in the one to come.

I do not need to be rich to invest in the Kingdom of God.  I can invest time and talents in a child, a young person, an elderly grandparent, or neighbor.  The opportunities to invest in the kingdom are numberless!

When I do something for those who cannot repay me, it is noticed by the ONE who will certainly repay me.  Repayment I receive in this life will be a blessing now.  But the repayment I will receive in heaven, will last for all eternity!

PRAYER:   Lord, you have done more for me than I can ever repay.  Today give me the joy of serving you by giving to someone who has no means to repay me.  Amen.

“But YOU have said…”

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 13, 2023: SOAP #4789: Genesis 31-33; Luke 13

SCRIPTURE:  Genesis (NIV) 32:9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’ 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. …
11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.
12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”

OBSERVATION:  When Jacob had left, it was because Esau had threatened to kill him. (Genesis 27)   Now God is sending him back home.  Jacob is terrified of meeting His brother.  He split his herds and family into several groups and sent them ahead to meet Esau.  Then Jacob prayed.  In prayer, he reminded God that it was at God’s direction he was returning home.  He humbly confessed his unworthiness of God’s blessings.  He prayed for God’s intervention to save him from Esau’s wrath.  And he closed by praying the promise God had given him.

APPLICATION: When God gives an assignment, He gives His promise.  It is not uncommon to encounter difficulties when doing God’s assignments.  Like Jacob, when we face those difficulties, we need to pray.  And when we pray, we should pray the promises!  Jacob finished his prayer with, “But YOU have said…”

God will often use people to fulfill His promises; He may use me to let people know, but it is not for me to try to convince people to help.  My focus should be on God and His word.  The Holy Spirit is a much better persuader than am I.  God will be blessed when I put my whole trust in Him. God will be blessed when people respond to His call.

What are God’s promises to me?

PRAYER:   Thank you for using me in your kingdom.  Thank you for your promises of your Presence and your provision.  Amen
