Pastor Leon’s SOAP: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
May 26, 2023: SOAP #4922: Proverbs 1-3; Romans 7
SCRIPTURE: Proverbs (NIV) 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
OBSERVATION: As I read the familiar verses above, one thought seemed to catch my attention. “Do not be wise in your own eyes.”
Practicing this simple directive will go a long way in pride-proofing my life—ensuring pride does not get a strong hold in me.
APPLICATION: How I look at myself plays an important part in how others see me, and how God sees me. Humility is not thinking less of myself; it is thinking of myself less. I am not to be the focus of my thoughts and actions. I am a child of God, but I did not become that by my own actions. I am what I am only by the grace of God. The wisdom God has given me is not to make me look good, but to give me avenues of serving others.
The wisdom and talents I have come from God, and He will hold me accountable for how I use them.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, the more I get to know you and understand your great plan for mankind, the more humble I become, and the more grateful I become to have a part. Amen
