Pastor Leon’s SOAP: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
January 10, 2024: SOAP #5151: Genesis 25-26; Psalm 6; Luke 10
SCRIPTURE: Luke (NIV) 10:29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” … (Jesus tells the story about the robbed traveler an two who passed by) … Luke 10:33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him …. 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
OBSERVATION: The first question was for Jesus from the expert in the law: “Who is my neighbor?” The second question was from Jesus: “Which one was a neighbor to the man in trouble?” According to Jesus, being a neighbor is not so much a question of living on the same street, but of traveling the same road and a willingness to get involved.
APPLICATION: In applying the truth of this story to myself, a third question could be who is my neighbor? I am in trouble. Who will help me today?
But when considering the words of Jesus, the third question is Who needs my help? To whom will I be a neighbor today?
PRAYER: Lord, sometimes I am more interested in who is a neighbor to me. Today help me see to whom I can be a good neighbor. Amen.
