SCRIPTURE: Mark (NIV) 12:41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
OBSERVATION: Jesus did not criticize the wealthy for giving “out of their wealth,” but He made a special note of this poor woman giving “out of her poverty.” He did not try to stop the woman from giving. He did not say, “You need it worse than the temple needs it.” He did not say, “It is so small they will not miss it; it will not do any good.” He did not say, “Let the others who have more be the ones to give.” He did not say, “Since that is all you have, keep it for your needs.” And He did not say, “God sees your heart, so you do not need to give.”
The truth is, if anyone needed to give, it was her. She needed to give in order to receive. Her giving gained the attention of Jesus, the greatest Giver. This poor widow became the most talked about, the most read about money giver in the history of man!
APPLICATION: Obviously being a giver has nothing to do with the amount of money I have. I do not have to wait until I have more to become a giver. It is recognizing that all I have comes from HIM; He is not running short; He loves me enough to provide more.
PRAYER: Lord, You are the greatest of all givers. Make me more like you. Amen.
