About SOAPs by Leon

At the end of my first year in Bible College, the Lord sent me into the US Navy. It was at a serviceman's center in San Diego where I met and married Sharon. During the final years of the ten years I spent in the US Navy, most with the US Marine Corps as a hospital corpsman, I became the pastor of Bayview Chapel A/G in Kaneohe, Hawaii. After 17 years, the Lord sent us back to my birth state, Kansas, where we were pastors of Andover Assembly of God for 20 years. In retirement, the Lord has given me two assignments: first is to write these daily devotions. You are being allowed to eves drop in on what He is saying to me. You will notice the applications are usually in the first person. The second assignment is to drive a school bus. What a privilege to serve others in this practical way and to interact with people outside the church environment. My heart smiles as I continue to joyfully serve my God and others. :) A third assignment from the Kansas Assemblies of God is to be the ministry coordinator for the Kansas Senior Adult Ministries. My wife, Sharon and myself enjoy traveling around the state of Kansas, visiting the churches and encouraging ministry to senior adults and the ministries of senior adults.

My Words…spoken AND written

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 17, 2025: SOAP #5705: Isaiah 29-31; James 1

SCRIPTURE:  James (NIV) 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

OBSERVATION:   Our mouth and our words are a very important part of our religion.  We enter our relationship with God by our words. Romans 10:10 says “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”  1John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  Although not the only expression of our faith, words are commonly the first expression.  James tells us that our words are important as we continue in our relationship with God.

APPLICATION:  My words are a window through which others can see into my soul.    My words reveal my attitudes and my priorities.   My words bring the thoughts of my heart out into the open.   (Matthew 12:34)

But it is not just the words that come from my mouth, but also the words that I write in letters, even those I put on Facebook, the internet, and other “social media.”  Some people must think that since no one is listening to their speech it is ok to write their thoughts and feelings on the internet.

We should take our words to God before we blurt them out of our mouth or write them on the internet!

PRAYER:   Holy Spirit, help the words I speak from my mouth, and the words I write on the internet, not to be a quick response to what is happening around me, but a sure expression of Your Presence within me.    Amen

He is a Good Farmer/Gardener!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 15, 2025: SOAP #5703: Isaiah 25-28; Hebrews 13

SCRIPTURE:  Isaiah (MSSG) 28:24 Do farmers plow and plow and do nothing but plow? Or harrow and harrow and do nothing but harrow? 25 After they’ve prepared the ground, don’t they plant? Don’t they scatter dill and spread cumin, Plant wheat and barley in the fields and raspberries along the borders? 26 They know exactly what to do and when to do it. Their God is their teacher. 27 And at the harvest, the delicate herbs and spices, the dill and cumin, are treated delicately. 28 On the other hand, wheat is threshed and milled, but still not endlessly. The farmer knows how to treat each kind of grain. 29 He’s learned it all from GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, who knows everything about when and how and where.

OBSERVATION:   When God takes me through tough times, it can be because He is disciplining me or because He sees something that I can do better.  So He uses the plough to uproot the weeds.  His goal is not to interrupt my life, but to prepare me for something better.  After ploughing, he will plant seeds for a harvest.  He is an excellent farmer or gardener!   I am His field!

APPLICATION:  Farming and gardening work in seasons.  It takes time.  God is the expert on knowing the seasons for planting, watering, and growing.  God knows the nature of each crop and how long is needed in each season.  God has taken me through several seasons in preparing me to write these SOAPs.

And God has carefully prepared and placed them to reach into several Muslim communities.  God loves the Muslims so much and desires that they be a part of His Kingdom!  He has carefully been scattering some SOAP seeds in the Muslim areas and many have received Jesus as Savior and Lord!

PRAYER:  Lord, we pray for the new members of your kingdom.  They have received your forgiveness and are living for your glory.  May your word become strong in their lives.  Amen

What fills my vision?

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 15, 2025: SOAP #5703: Isaiah 22-24; Hebrews 12

OBSERVATION:   Here we are invited to join the author in setting our focus on Jesus.  If we have received Him as our Lord and Savior, this is a very logical invitation.  Knowing that he is the greatest source of wisdom, means that my mind is always open to His input.  Knowing that He can see into the future and knows the thoughts and purposes of those around me…it is foolish for me to push Him out of my thoughts!

In this verse and its context, the author of Hebrews does not hide the fact that living for Jesus can be difficult.  Everything does not go our way.  We may be persecuted by those who do not understand.    Jesus too was persecuted, and I am not called to endure more than he did.

APPLICATION:  So what am I to do?  I am to focus—to fix my eyes upon Jesus.  Presently, it is the eyes of faith.  Soon it will be face to face.  I need to keep singing the chorus I learned years ago.
                       Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face.

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace.

PRAYER:   Lord, looking at you always lifts my day.    Amen.

What it takes to please God!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 14, 2025: SOAP #5702: Isaiah 19-21; Hebrews 11

SCRIPTURE:  Hebrews (NIV) 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Hebrews (NIV) 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

OBSERVATION:   God could have set any criteria as a basis for His favor.  He could have chosen to favor those with great abilities.  He could have chosen to favor those with physical beauty …or with great knowledge …or those who make great accomplishments.   In these areas, we may excel in comparison to others, but in comparison to God, we all fall short.   But God chooses a measure for His blessings in which we all start at the same level.  God chose FAITH!   Our faith pleases God!

APPLICATION:  Faith in God is very reasonable.  It is just as reasonable as believing something weighing thousands of pounds can move through the air without touching the ground.  To me it is so reasonable to believe that airplanes fly that I pay money to ride.  And it is even more reasonable to believe that the God of the universe created me for His glory.  He is pleased when I become convinced that He is and that He loves me.  I am learning to love Him and trust His word!

PRAYER:   Lord, you are believable!  Believing in you gives meaning to my life.   Amen

The way it was/The way it is!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 13, 2025: SOAP #5701: Isaiah 15-18; Hebrews 10

SCRIPTURE:  [This was the way it was under the Old Testament Law.]
Hebrews (NIV) 10:11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again, and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
[This is how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament Law!]
Hebrews 10:14  because by one sacrifice he has made perfect for ever those who are being made holy.
[Now, this is the way it is: Old Testament laws written on stone tablets now replaced by New Testament laws written on hearts by the Holy Spirit]
Hebrews 10:16 …I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.

OBSERVATION:   What a difference Jesus made!  He put an end to the daily sacrifices made in the tabernacle, then in the temple.  And the way He did it is amazing.  He did not just make a statement that animal sacrifices were not really covering the cost of sin; He personally made the true sacrifice to which the animal sacrifices pointed.  Once and for all time, He made the perfect sacrifice to cover the penalty for sin!  It never needs to be repeated!  AND WHAT”S MORE: He sent the Holy Spirit to live in our hearts!

APPLICATION:  My first response is to accept His offer of forgiveness; He is my Savior!  My next response is to thank Him.  Then I make my Savior to be my Lord (a title that He rightly deserves).  Then, with the help of the Holy Spirit, I set my heart to live a life that brings Him honor and great joy.

PRAYER:   Jesus, after all You have done for me, my response must be more than just “Thank you!”  My life is yours. My future is yours. Today is yours!  Amen

Death is not the end!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 12, 2025: SOAP #5700: Isaiah 11-14; Hebrews 9

SCRIPTURE:  Hebrews (NIV) 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

OBSERVATION:   Obviously what we often consider the end, is not the end.  Death is not the end.  What comes next?  Judgment.   Just as death was not the end for Jesus, death is not the end for us.

The Father so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son… (John 3:16)   Jesus was sent to earth to die for the sins of God’s creation.  His death was not the end of His existence.  Death is not the end of our existence, just a doorway through which we pass into life eternal.

APPLICATION:  Since we are destined to “die once” we can be assured that the life after death will never end.  Death will have no power over those who have died.  For those who have accepted the death of Jesus as the payment for their sins, they will enter the never-ending joys of heaven.  For those who have refused to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they will enter the never-ending judgment in hell.

PRAYER:   Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice in payment for my sins.  I want my life to count for you. Amen

We do have such a High Priest!!!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 11, 2025: SOAP #5699: Isaiah 8-10; Hebrews 8

(last years SOAP which perfectly follows yesterdays)

SCRIPTURE:  Hebrews (NIV) 8:1 The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.

OBSERVATION:   After years of high priests wearing ceremonial garments and offering token sacrifices for sin and then dying in office.  After years of offering animal sacrifices that could never properly cover the sins of the people for which they were killed.  After years of going through ceremonies and rituals full of meaning but that could never change any heart.  Wouldn’t it be good to have a real high priest who would not die in office and need to be replaced?  Wouldn’t it be good to have a high priest make a sacrifice that could really pay for sin?

The point of what the writer of Hebrews is saying is that in Jesus we really do have such a High Priest!!!   We have a High Priest who was sinless and sacrificed His own blood to be the covering for sin!  We have a High Priest who rose from the death of His own sacrifice and will never die again!  He is eternal!

APPLICATION:   His one sacrifice covers the sins of our grandparents, our parents, us, our children and our grandchildren—generations before and generations after!

What a day that will be when family generations will join to worship this Great High Priest!   He is worthy of the praise of all generations!

PRAYER:  Lord, you are the Great High Priest who fulfilled all the prophecies we find in the tabernacle built by the Israelites in the wilderness.  You are the Great High Priest who made the one sacrifice that will forever be accepted as the payment for sin.  On my knee I bow, and with my tongue confess that you are LORD!   Amen.

Unlike

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 10, 2025: SOAP #5698: Micah 5-7; Hebrews 7

SCRIPTURE:  Hebrews (NIV) 7:27   Unlike the other high priests, he (Jesus) does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people.  He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself!

OBSERVATION:   UNLIKE the High Priests making the sacrifice for the sins of the people in the Old Testament, Jesus did not need to bring a sacrifice for his own sins.  AND UNLIKE the Old Testament priests, Jesus did not bring an animal, He gave his own life as the sacrifice.  AND UNLIKE the Old Testament priests Jesus did not make a sacrifice in faith that the proper sacrifice would someday be made to reward the faith of the worshippers.  Jesus sacrifice was the fulfillment of the faith of all the previous sacrifices!  AND UNLIKE the Old Testament priests, Jesus did not make a sacrifice that would need to be repeated.  His sacrifice put an end to all future sacrifices for sin!

APPLICATION:  His “once for all” sacrifice is sufficient to cover all my sins!   When He forgave me, He did not just sweep my sins under the rug, He did not say, “Leon, your sins are not very bad; we will just forget about them.”  NO, He said, “Leon, your sins are terrible, but my sacrifice is sufficient!”   His sacrifice was more than sufficient to cover my sins—and the sins of the whole world!

PRAYER:   Lord, I am amazed at your holiness and love!  I am amazed at your sacrifice for me.  You are amazing!  Thank you for forgiving me and cleansing me from ALL unrighteousness!    Amen

Sunshine in the Heart!

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 09, 2025: SOAP #5697: Micah 1-4; Hebrews 6

SCRIPTURE:  Hebrews (NIV) 6:19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

OBSERVATION:   How sad it is to hear of someone being hopeless.  To them everything looks gloomy.  They feel that nothing will work out for good.  What a difference to those whose hope is in Christ.

Hope in God is an anchor that holds the soul steady in the midst of the storm.  The circumstances may be gloomy, but there is sunshine in the heart.  There is a confidence that all things will work together for good because they love the Lord and are called according to His purpose!  (Romans 8:28)

APPLICATION:  My hope is confidence that God is in control.  My hope is confidence that He is able to use even the bad to bring about good things.  What people may do for evil, He uses for good!  With Him, I cannot lose!

My hope is confidence that He loves me and wants me to live a life that pleases Him.  My hope is the certainty that His plan for me is to spend eternity with Him!

PRAYER:   Lord, there is no area of my life that is not affected by my hope!  Thank you for hope!  Amen

Scriptural Expressions of Praise and Worship

Pastor Leon’s SOAP:  Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
July 07, 2025: SOAP #5695: Hosea 13-14; Psalm 100, 102; Hebrews 5

SCRIPTURE:  Psalm (NIV) 100:1 Shout for joy to the LORD all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
3.  Know that the LORD is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

OBSERVATION:   Joy and gladness, shouts and songs are proper expressions in God’s presence.   In the above verse, I am told that gladness is to be a part of my worship.

As a child, I learned many up-beat joyful songs that we sang in honor of what God had done.  The following generations have written new songs, and future generations will still be writing new songs.  Music lends itself to worship.  The Holy Spirit puts a smile on our face and a song in our heart!

APPLICATION:  My circumstances may not be the source of my shouts and songs, of my joy and gladness.  But I know who created me.  I am His.  I am a sheep in His pasture.  I have many reasons for joy.  True joy in my heart will find some outward expression.

PRAYER:   Lord, when circumstances would make me hopeless, unhappy, and gloomy Your presence, Oh God, causes me to shout and sing and worship with joy and gladness!    Amen
