Ever Ready!

June 10: Song of Solomon 1-4; Ephesians 6

Ever Ready!

Scripture: Ephesians 6:13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Observation: It is not enough to just know about the armor of God, or to have studied it. It is not enough to have it handy, nearby. It must be “put on.” We must be wearing it. We must be walking in it. The next verse tells us the belt must be “buckled” and the breast plate of righteousness “in place.” The belt is not to be hanging on the back of a door in the closet. The breastplate of righteousness is not to be sitting on the floor near the door.

Application: As we patrolled the DMZ (demilitarized zone) between North and South Viet Nam we were always alert and ready. I do not recall the company commander or platoon leader spending a lot of time reminding us to keep our flak jackets on or our weapons cleaned and ready. We never knew when we would encounter the enemy. We had to live ready. I must learn to walk with that same awareness when it comes to my spiritual life.

Prayer: Lord, help me keep spiritually alert and well prepared for any temptation the enemy brings my way. Amen.
