Humility

Pastor Leon’s SOAP: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer

October 1: Zechariah 10-12; Psalm 126; Luke 14

Scripture: Luke (NIV) 14:8 When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, “Give this man your seat.” Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, “Friend, move up to a better place.” Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Observation: This teaching from Jesus is so in keeping with the way he lived. He lived as a servant. Humility has great value with God. When one exalts himself, it is for others to humble them. When one humbles himself, it is for others to exalt them. It is so much better to be exalted by others than to be humbled by others.

Application: Whether I am standing in line at McDonalds or driving with traffic on the highway, I can practice humility. What do I have that I have not been given? What do I know that I have not been taught? Humility should be a major character trait in me.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, How can I be other than humble when I think of how you love me and what you have done for me? I am your humble servant! Amen
