September 10, 2015: SOAP #2107:
Scripture: Lamentations (NIV) 3:21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
Observation: The prophet Jeremiah’s heart was full of grief because of the judgment that had come upon Judah because of Judah’s sin. During his grieving, the prophet found a source of hope in doing two things. First, he actively remembered God’s character. He pondered God’s love. Second, he talked to himself. He spoke of God’s place in his life. The prophet took the initiative in directing his thoughts and in talking to himself.
Application: In situations that seem hopeless, I have many things I can “call to mind” of God’s great love for me. I can also state with confidence, “The LORD is my portion!” In so doing, I strike at the fear in my heart and encourage my hope! As I take the initiative to do what I can do, I can trust the LORD who “is my portion” to do what He can do!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, waiting on you becomes very logical when I take time to recall who you are and what you have done in the past. And while waiting, I can talk to myself in songs, hymns and spiritual songs. (Ephesians 5:19) Amen
