March 8, 2016: SOAP #2287:
Scripture: Mark (NIV) 15:29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
Observation: My heart is drawn to the irony in the words of the chief priests and teachers of the law. First: He did have the power to save himself. He could have stopped the proceedings at any point. He had the power, but He did not use it! Second: If Jesus had saved himself He would not have been able to save others. His death is the only acceptable payment for the sins of man.
Application: Jesus willingly gave Himself for me! In great love He chose what would bring the highest good for me even though it cost great suffering for Him. To Him I owe my all!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for not withdrawing yourself from the suffering and shame of the cross. It was your suffering and shame that qualified you to be the payment for my sin! Amen
