Putting Religion into Practice

June 23, 2016: SOAP #2394: 2Kings 10; 2Chronicles 22,23; 1Timothy 5

Scripture: 1Timothy (NIV) 5:3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.

Observation: Recently I have noticed that humility and giving are two special characteristics that attract God’s attention. This verse specifically notes something else that pleases God: caring for one’s parents and grandparents. Verses like the ones above have special meaning for people who love God and desire to please Him.

Application: Putting my “religion into practice” is more than just a mental exercise. It requires action. Faith must be seeable. Those around me should be able to recognize my faith by my actions, including how I respect and care for my parents.

Prayer:   Holy Spirit, although I am already a parent and a grandparent, help me show respect for older generations around me. May my actions show that I appreciate them and their contributions to my life. Amen
