January 21, 2018: SOAP #2971: Exodus 1-2; Psalm 88; Luke 21
Scripture: Luke (NIV) 21:9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” 10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
Observation: In these two verses, Jesus gives us three places to look for signs of the end times. First: among nations—wars. Second: in the earth—earthquakes, famines and pestilences. Third: in the heavens—fearful events and great signs.
Application: I am thankful that the economy in the United States is improving. I am thankful that the unemployment numbers are going down. I am thankful that the number of people on food stamps is decreasing. Though many changes in our nation are still needed, I am thankful for improvement. But these are not the signs for which Jesus told us to look. I need to consider what is happening among the nations. I need to consider the “natural” disasters in the earth. And I need to start looking at the heavens for fearful events and great signs.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, as this chapter emphasizes, help me to be watchful, to look, to see what is happening in the world around me. Amen
