SCRIPTURE: John (NIV) 20:6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes,
OBSERVATION: They were faced with the reality of the resurrection before they had full understanding from the scriptures. They were at the scene of the greatest miracle in history! …and they “went back to their homes!” People travel from all around the earth to visit a tomb from which they believe Jesus arose, but the disciples “went back to their homes!”
Why? How could this happen? The Bible says, “they still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.” Many time Jesus had told them that He would be killed and the third day would rise from the dead, but the disciples did not grasp the truth that now confronted them. That Jesus would rise from the dead was not new information, but the truth had not been mixed into their understanding.
There have been times when I too have been faced with the truth of some issue before I had revelation from the scriptures of how God sees the issue. Once I aligned my thinking with the scripture, things began to make sense.
APPLICATION: When people are confronted with the truth of a God who loves them, of Jesus who died for their sins, or of the miraculous power of God, they respond with faith and often commit their lives to Jesus as Lord. But they still need to build their faith on the truth in God’s Word.
PRAYER: Lord, help me grow in truth. And use me to write SOAPs that help others grow in understanding of truth. Amen
