Present, Promising and Providing…

February 22: Numbers 10-11; Psalm 27; Mark 1

Present, Promising and Providing…

Scripture: Numbers (NIV) 11: 21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’
22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”
23 The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you.”

Observation: Moses had personally witnessed enough miracles that God’s word promising enough meat to eat for a whole month should have been easily believable. But Moses was under a heavy load and depressed by the people’s complaining. (Note: verses 11-14.) He questions God’s capability to bring this about. His mind was more on the complaining people than the Present, Promising and Providing God! (Note: verses 31-32 accounts how God provided.)

Application: At time present circumstances hinder my faith by dimming my memory of what God has done in the past for me. But the Present, Promising and Providing God is with me too!

Prayer: Lord, I am so glad I can count on You! Amen.

Creation

February 4: Exodus 37-38; Psalm 19; Acts 11

Creation

Scripture: Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Observation: Several years back, we were at an Independence Day celebration. The sky was covered with clouds and there was a possibility of rain. As darkness settled in, the fireworks started. They were beautiful against the dark sky. Then the first bolt of lightning stretched across the sky. The aerial fireworks in comparison seemed like they were barely above the trees. They seemed so small. What an awesome God! That night the heavens declared His glory!!!

Application: Now that the sun is rising a little earlier each day and my bus route takes me into the rising sun, I see the skies proclaiming the glory of God. Each sunrise is different, but each reveals the glory of a magnificant Creator.

Prayer: Lord, Creation is your work; its grandeur and its variety inspire me. Amen.

Truth for the New Year!

January 1: Genesis 1-2; Luke 1

Truth for the New Year

Scripture: Luke 1:37 For nothing is impossible with God.

Observation: The angel speaking in this verse to Mary had told her some things that may have been hard to believe. Her relative Elizabeth, though quite elderly, would be having a baby! And Mary, though a virgin, would be having a baby also! The baby would be called the “Son of the Most High” (being conceived by the Holy Spirit) and at the same time would be given the throne of “his father, David,” (as Mary was a descendent of King David.)

How can this be? The angel leaves her with this: “For nothing is impossible with God.”

The angel’s statement is a declaration of the character and ability of the God who sent him to Mary. It is truth that Mary would need to apply many times in the days ahead.

Application: As I enter the New Year, the angel’s declaration must become my declaration. My circumstances are different than Mary’s, but my God is not! The truth shines ahead of me into the unknown: Nothing is impossible with God!

Prayer: Lord, nothing is impossible with you! I am going to think and live like that is true! Amen.

Palms up

December 31: Revelation 19-22

Palms up

Scripture: Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

…three verses later…

Revelation 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Observation: As in Genesis chapter 2 we find Adam and Eve were given only two choices, either to eat or not to eat, so here at the end of the Bible we find only two destinations: the “lake of fire” and “heaven.” The choice is ours.

Application: Sometimes in playing with young children I hide a small toy in my hands behind my back then bring my closed hands to the front asking them to choose in which hand is the prize. God is not like that at all. He holds the choices before us in His open hands, palms up.

Prayer: Lord, living for you is not a guessing game. Through your word and by your Spirit I can know which choice honors you. Sometimes I may not know clearly which one honors you, but I can clearly see which one does NOT honor you. Amen.

No Surprise!

December 28: Revelation 5-9

No surprise!

Scripture: Revelation (NIV) 6: 15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.
16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!
17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

Observation: It is very understandable that a mother would become extremely angry when someone tries to harm the child she loves so dearly. It seems that the amount of her anger could be in proportion to the amount of her love.

God the Son loves God the Father so much that He was willing to come to earth to redeem those created in His image.

God the Father loves God the Son so much and wants Him to be honored by those for whom He died.

When those for whom Christ died reject Him, no one should be surprised that it makes the Father angry. He loves His Son!

Application: It is good for me to remember that this Holy God who loves me also loves His Son, Jesus. I should not be surprised to discover that the Father takes personally how I treat Jesus. (John 5:23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.)

Prayer: Lord, you remain perfectly holy and perfectly loving at all times, even when you are angry for your anger is never expressed outside the boundary of justice and it is against those who dishonor the Father you love so much. Amen.

Still discovering…

December 27: Revelation 1-4

Still discovering…

Scripture: Revelation (NIV) 2:4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.
5 Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

Observation: The excitement of first love is somewhat like the excitement of discovering something new. If we have not seen the value of our new discovery by the time its newness wears off, it is easy to move our attention and devotion elsewhere.

What a joy it is to see someone experience the joy of being forgiven and committing their life to Jesus. How sad it is to see them forsake that first love because they did not grow in appreciation of their salvation and did not continue to discover new things about the One who provided it for them.

Application: The newness is gone from this laptop computer I am using, however, because I have learned how to use it every day, it has become too valuable to forsake. And should I apply myself, every day I could discover something new about the computer or the programs I am using.

How much more this is true of my relationship with God. He is too valuable to forsake! And every day He reveals something new or gives me fresh understanding of things He has previously taught me. He is amazing!

Prayer: Lord, every day is a new day with you. I am still discovering new mercies every morning! Amen.

Walking in the light

December 20: John 7-8

Walking in the light

Scripture: John (NIV) 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Observation: Jesus is the creator of all things and one cannot walk very long with Him without growing in appreciation for creation and the many expressions of life He has placed on this earth. He is the “light of life.”

Application: I had flown on many planes in my life but now having lived twenty years in an area known for building planes, I have a greater appreciation for the details in planning and manufacturing planes. And having walked with the Lord even longer, I can say that I continue to be amazed by God’s details in the planning and creating of life, both physical and spiritual. He brings me out of darkness into the light.

Prayer: Lord, you amaze me. Your creation amazes me. In walking with you I am walking in the light. The more your light reveals, the more amazed I am! Amen.

John’s Christmas Story

December 17: 2Peter 1-3; John 1

John’s Christmas Story

Scripture: John (NIV) 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Observation: The “Christmas Story” in John does not give the account of the angels, the shepherds or the magi from the east. It tells us nothing of Joseph, or Jesus’ earthly mother, Mary. We read nothing of the Bethlehem nor of the reason Jesus was born there. But what we read is so important! The Word who is as much God as God became flesh, as much man as man!

Application: Jesus walked and lived in time and space, in history and geography. We know the years in which he lived and the cities in which he walked. He is very much aware of the struggles I face. He knows what it is like to live among people like the ones around me. He is well able to help me because He has personal knowledge and understands.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for coming to earth and living among people like me. Thank you for your personal involvement in my salvation. Amen.

The perfect fit!

December 12: Hebrews 5-8

The perfect fit!

Scripture: Hebrews 7:25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26 Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

Observation: Jesus is the perfect High Priest who made the perfect sacrifice for sin. He meets my need perfectly!

Application: So many times I have had to settle for less than what I really needed. From two or three choices I had to choose the one that would come closest to meeting my need. It was not exactly what I needed, but it would have to do. However, the more I understand Jesus, the more I am convinced that he perfectly meets my need.

Prayer: Lord, it is a perfect match: my need and your supply! Amen.

Great AND Rich

December 4: Ephesians 1-4

Great AND Rich

Scripture: Ephesians (NIV) 2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Observation: What a God! He has great love and is rich in mercy. Two words that should make every believer’s heart rejoice: “great” and “rich.”

Application: God’s love for me cannot be described as ordinary. It is GREAT love! I do not have to squeeze mercy from God; He is RICH in mercy toward me!

Prayer: Lord, How great is your love for me and how rich is your mercy! I am so blest! Amen.
