Eternity in view

November 10: Job 35, 36; 1Corinthians 7, 8

Scripture: 1Corinthians 7:16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

Observation: “But God wants me to be happy,” is the reason I have heard from a “believer” wanting to justify their desire to divorce, and subsequently their desire to marry someone else. “God would not want me to stay unhappy all my life.” No! No! No! What God wants is for your spouse to be saved! God wants you to rejoice all through eternity because the one who was your husband/wife is in heaven too. God wants us to love our wives/husbands the way Christ loved us, even when we were unlovable! Should an unbelieving spouse get a divorce (verse 15), may they never be able to say that they were not loved!

Application: Living for God is so worthwhile, however it is not always easy. Doing my best to keep the wedding promises I made as a solemn vow before God is always worthwhile, but that too is not always easy. But we have the promise of His presence every moment of every day!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for those who have been married for 50, 60, and some even 70+ years. What a blessing their example is to us. Amen.

Whose body?

November 9: Job 34; 1Corinthians 4-6

Scripture: 1Corinthians (NIV) 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Observation: My body has great value to God as it is a temple in which the Holy Spirit can live. My body has great value to me as I use it to interact with the world around me. It provides many opportunities to honor God by doing those things that please Him.

Application: I think of my mind like a computer. My computer has two types of memory: a large amount stored on a hard drive, and a lesser amount that is active and can quickly interact with whatever is happening. It seems my mind also has two types of memory, memory that requires some thought to recall and memory that is available instantly.

This verse contains information that I need to keep in my active memory. Wherever I am, whatever I am doing, I need keep aware that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, may you be honored by the way I present and use my body today. Keep reminding me of the great price you paid for me. I am yours! Amen.

Faithful

November 8: Job 33, 1Corinthians 1-3

Scripture: 1Corinthians (NIV) 1:9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

Observation: A major characteristic of God is faithfulness. God is holy and a major expression of His holiness is faithfulness. He is faithful to His people. He is faithful to truth. He is faithful to Himself and His character.

Application: In desiring God to do something for me, I may be asking Him to slight His holiness or ignore the truth. I should be extremely happy to find that God will not break His faithfulness to truth, for only then can I count on His faithfulness to me.

Prayer: Lord, may your faithfulness be expressed through me. Amen.

Choices = proof of love

November, 7: Job 31, 32; Galatians 5,6

Scripture: Galatians (NIV) 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Observation: Our freedom is so important to God; He wants us to love Him because that is our choice. Love is expressed through our choices. If there is no choice, it is not an expression of love. Some choices can lead to bondage when what begins as a choice becomes the master. It is our responsibility to make choices that protect our freedom.

Application: Making choices to serve and please my wife is a major way of saying, “I love you,” especially when not what I would personally like to do. The same is true with God. I choose to serve God because I love Him and am convinced that He is worthy of my devotion. I must remember: the greater the sacrifice, the greater the expression of love. My choices are the proof of who I love and how much I love.

Prayer: Lord, what can I do today to please you? Amen.

God’s goal for me

November 6: Job 30; Psalm 120; Galatians 3,4

Scripture: Galatians (NIV) 4: 4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,
5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

Observation: Why did Jesus come? Why was he born of a woman? Why was he born under the law? He did it to redeem us that we might become in every sense His God’s children.

Jesus stood where we stood to enable us to stand where He stands! He came under the law, to fulfill the law, not for Himself, for He Who was born without sin, and never committed a sin, needed no sacrifice for His sins. But He became the perfect sacrifice for sinful man.

He made it possible for us to receive the FULL RIGHT of sons. What do you think about that!!!! Who can fathom what that means, not only in this present life, but in the life to come!

Application: Today I am God’s son. God has brought me into His family and given me the goal to become like Jesus. Of course for me to ever realize that goal, I will need the continual guidance of the Holy Spirit just as Jesus had.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, may I hear your voice clearly today as you guide me in being like Jesus. Amen.

Timing

November 5: Job 28-29; Galatians 1-2

Scripture: Galatians (NIV) 2:1 Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.

Observation: At times when we read the scriptures we forget how much time passes between events. We read them as though they happened back to back. Unless we take time to notice the specifics, we might get the idea that Paul was converted in one chapter and then just a short time later was preaching in Antioch and then moving into his missionary journeys.

Application: The truth is that God often seems to be taking His time. From my perspective, I think He is moving too slowly. From His perspective He is moving in perfect timing; He moves when the greatest good can be accomplished. Although He is not in a hurry, neither does He waste time. When the timing is right, He can move fast, even in nano seconds! I have also found that sometimes when I am waiting on God, He is waiting on me.

Prayer: Lord, I have lived long enough to see the value of your timing worked out more than once in my life. Even though I know your timing is best, I still get impatient. Help me to trust your timing. Amen.

Satisfying whom?

November 4: Job 26-27; Mark 15-16

Scripture: (NIV) Mark 15:15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Observation: Who was in charge, Pilate or the crowd? Pilate abdicated his authority to the crowd. What a mistake! Four or five time Pilate is quoted as saying Jesus is innocent. It is always a mistake to want “to satisfy the crowd.” There is only One Whom we should strive to please. There are times when pleasing Him pleases others also, but He must remain our priority.

Application: A worthy goal: to make Him smile! … to please Him! … to bring joy to His heart and a smile to His face!

Prayer: Lord, may You be pleased with the way I live this day. May you enjoy spending this day with me. Amen.

Prepared for use

November 3: Job 25; Mark 13-14

Scripture: (NIV) Mark 14:14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
15 He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

Observation: What a privilege for this household to host the last supper. The room could be used because it was “furnished” and “ready.” The owner had provided and prepared it for such an occasion.

Application: Are my home, my car, and my possessions available and ready to be used by the Lord? More important, is my life available and ready to be used. I need to keep it “furnished” with the truth from the Bible. If I want the Lord to use me, I must prepare myself to be used and make myself available. I should be as diligent in preparing my life for use as the firefighter is in preparing the fire engine for its use.

Prayer: Lord, show me how to prepare myself and my possessions for Your use. As the song say, “To be used of You is my desire.” Amen.

What A Teacher!

November 2: Job 23-24; Mark 11-12

Scripture: Mark 12:1 (NIV) 1 He then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey.

Observation: When Jesus taught heavenly principles He always used earthy illustrations that would be easy for people to understand. He used illustrations from their everyday life, things with which they were already familiar. When He left, He sent the Holy Spirit to continue this ministry of revealing truth.

Application: When the Holy Spirit shows me something new I often come away thinking, that is so simple. The most profound truths are put in the simplest of terms so that even I can understand them! He is a good teacher for me because 1) He perfectly understands the truth, and 2) He perfectly understands me. I could not ask for a better teacher.

Several weeks ago I stood gazing at a large framed picture of a cross section of the human ear. I recalled drawing such a picture in a health class back in the 1960’s. I vaguely recall my amazement at how the parts of the ear worked together to provide my sense of hearing. But this poster had important details of such tiny parts that were probably unknown when I made my drawing. Though unknown, yet they were there, working together, or I would have been unable to hear. The Holy Spirit was using a very earthy illustration to impress on me the wonderful capabilities of my Creator! The intricacy of the design demanded acknowledgment of an amazing Designer!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for being my teacher. Enable those of us who teach to clearly understanding the truth and how to best communicate it to others. Amen.

Mountaintop, Valley Too

November 1: Psalm 121; Mark 9-10

Scripture: Mark (NIV) 9:2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them….
8 Suddenly, when they looked round, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Observation: Peter, James and John were with Jesus on a true mountain top experience. They were privileged to watch as Jesus stepped back into heaven and had a visit with two Old Testament saints: Elijah and Moses. But all of a sudden, it was over. Elijah and Moses were gone. But Jesus remained. Together they went back down the mountain to face the troubles in their world. The One with them as they went up the mountain was the same One who came back down with them!

Application: Wonderful experiences with friends and even wonderful experiences with God have come to an end, but His Presence has remained constant! And like the Psalmist (Psalm 23:4) I have found that what is true of mountain-top experiences is also true of valley times. The One who goes in with me will be the One who comes out with me.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your constant Presence in my life! Amen.
