January 23, 2016: SOAP #2242:
Scripture: Luke (NIV) 23:22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him punished and then release him.” 23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
Observation: Pilate was convinced of the innocence of Jesus. There was no crime worthy of death. But the crowd would hear nothing of what Pilate had to say. Their chanted demand for crucifixion ruled the day and ultimately brought Pilate to their side.
Application: Like Pilate, I have faced situations when the arguments of those around me overruled what I knew to be true in my heart. The allure of temptation may seem irresistible. But I have something that Pilate did not have. I have the presence of the Holy Spirit. Greater is He that is in me than the crowd around me…than the temptation before me.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for living inside me. Together we face the crowd and the temptation. I depend on you for strength and wisdom. Amen
