October 18, 2016: SOAP #2511: Job 3-4; Acts 8-9
Scripture: Acts (NIV) 8:1 And Saul was consenting unto his [Steven’s] death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. … 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word.
Observation: As Jesus was leaving He gave what we today call the Great Commission: Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Just before He ascended into heaven He gave some instructions: Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. However, the church seemed content to remain in Jerusalem until persecution caused them to scatter throughout Judea and Samaria.
It is interesting to me that Paul was key in fulfilling Acts 1:8. First, as a passionate persecutor he helped scatter the church throughout Judea and Samaria. Second, as a passionate believer, he personally carried the gospel to the uttermost part of the Roman Empire.
Application: Times of trouble can motivate me and give me opportunity to shine the light of God’s presence and glory in my world.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to be focused on the big picture and not just my comfort. Amen
