June 19, 2016: SOAP #2390: 2Kings 1-3; Psalm 82; 1Timothy 1
Scripture: 1Timothy (NIV) 1:18 Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.
Observation: Paul was encouraging Timothy to continue following the promises and instructions God had earlier given Timothy. At times it would not be easy; it would be a struggle or fight. Satan would come to Timothy as he did to Eve, “Did God really say…” Timothy would have to hold on in faith to what God had said. Timothy would also need to a keep clear conscience which comes in two ways. First and best: resist temptation. Second: be quick to repent.
Application: It is important that I remember what God has personally said to me. His Word and will have priority. It may appear easier to change my direction, but it is better to hold on in faith. Changing direction must come from Him. Faithfulness is of greater value to God than success. The ultimate success will be hearing God say, “Well done.”
Prayer: Heavenly Father, who am I to think that I can choose better than you. I trust you to direct my path. Amen
